[Lore] Attilan Calendar

The Attilan Calendar

The roklavs reckoned the year 0 as the year of the state conversion in honor of Svetla. Today, it is a system mainly found in Maruba, following Roklavia’s downfall.

  2. Structure
  3. Important Events

When the state announced Svetla as the only true divinity, the attilan reckoning commenced. Missionaries had arrived for centuries b.s. (before Svetla) from somewhere south. Most likely they originated in some kingdom in ancient Vallenora, perhaps in the Lavandan area. The first missionary is known in legend as Siilvus, although his real name has been debated much since. He arrived in Smertangelsk and spoke to the king of the time, Valentin II. Despite being turned away rather firmly, he remained in western Nordenya and travelled the countryside, documenting tradition, flora and fauna, and unrelentingly spreading the message of Svetla. Eventually, he was martyred by assassins sent by the Lord of Rubegradshire, Lentor Kimorov. The followers of Siilvus, fellow missionaries, and other devotees combined eventually managed to convert all of Roklavia to the new faith. This event was marked as the year 0 of attilan reckoning. Siilvus is since this time forth a saint.

There was some debate on the naming of this calendar, which St. Siilvus himself devised. His most devoted disciples referred to it in texts already in year 3 as “The Siilvan Caldendar”. “The Roklavian Calendar” was very popular amongst the converted upper class, who took pride in the calendars, in time, geographic originality. However, king Attila I, who declared Roklavia officially Clairist, had other ideas. He issued the name “Attilan Calendar” to be written on every copy which came into existence, and to his satisfaction his plan worked; the commoners adapted the name.

The Attilan Calendar holds 12 months with 28-31 days each, and seven day weeks. All in all it is structured precisely as the Gregorian Calendar, which to some Mesters are known via ancient legend. What time recording system the roklavs used before this is unknown, as no records remain from its use.

  • The Week of Strastnya - Celebrated by the roklav people (and hence in modern day Maruba), the week of Strastnya is a harvest feast and marks the end of the summer, celebrating the arrival of St. Siilvus to Smertangelsk, followed by his setting out to speak to the people after being publicly humiliated by Valentin II. It lasts from the last Sunday of August to the first Sunday in September. During the week, the people traditionally donate bread and pork to the monks of nearby monasteries (the only time during the year when the members of these are allowed meat) and light red candles, representing the fire that was lit in the hearts of the people, as well as the blood that came to be shed as a result. In the old days, festivals were held in many of the major cities, and the Lords held speeches. After the fall of Roklavia, the tradition lived on in Maruba, although notably, the festival is here only held in the capital, which has a vast majority of ethnically roklav citizens.

  • Freedom Day - Occurs on 13th of June every year. Celebrated in Maruba and its related surroundings, Freedom Day is the National Day of Maruba, the very day that the Migilancy of Maruba was signed. In the capital, as well as in Piterud (since 2365 ar), large caravans wander the high streets, and the towns folk are out and shopping, drinking, and generally enjoying life. At midnight, fireworks are released from the Lighthouse of Alma, as well as the Fehérvár castle and the tower of the Cathedral of St. Icarus. The day is a holiday for all, where schools are closed, yet since 2369 businesses have had the option of keeping open until sundown, pubs all the way until sunrise.

  • New Year Feast - The New Year is, according to the Attilan Calendar, when the days are at their shortest. This is made to be the last of December. Again, firework displays are provided by the city of Maruba, but the crowds are significantly less mobile, mainly due to the harsh winter temperatures.
